The way our body is organised in relation to gravity influences our posture, mobility, and overall physical well-being. Physical strain, as well as emotional and psychological tension, can be reflected in our posture and patterns of tension.

Dr. Ida P. Rolf recognised early on the importance of a well-balanced body structure in relation to gravity. When the body is well organised and properly aligned, it can move more easily within the Earth's gravitational field and use gravity as a supportive force.

When this alignment is disrupted by physical or emotional strain, lack of movement, protective postures, or other influences, patterns of tension and compensation may develop. These can affect posture, mobility, and body awareness. Rolfing® addresses these patterns and supports the body in reorganising itself and developing a more balanced relationship with gravity.

The fascial network extends throughout the entire body, connecting its various structures. Fascia consists primarily of collagen-rich connective tissue and plays an important role in stability, mobility, force transmission, and body awareness. It is richly supplied with nerve endings and closely interacts with the muscles, joints, and nervous system.

The autonomic nervous system also plays an important role in this relationship. It regulates essential bodily functions such as heartbeat, breathing, and digestion, and responds to both physical and emotional stress. Prolonged stress, anxiety, and other emotional experiences can be associated with changes in muscle tension, posture, breathing, and movement patterns, thereby also influencing the tension within the fascial system.

Our body continuously adapts to physical demands. Repetitive strain, one-sided movement patterns, lack of movement, or protective postures can lead to compensatory patterns that restrict freedom of movement and place greater stress on certain areas of the body.

Prolonged stress can also increase the body's underlying level of tension. Physical and emotional processes cannot be viewed in isolation. It is precisely this connection between body awareness, the nervous system, tension, and movement that is of particular importance in the psychosomatic approach to bodywork.

Through targeted and individually tailored work with the fascial tissue, Rolfing® supports the body in changing patterns of tension and posture, enhancing freedom of movement and body awareness, and reorganising itself in relation to gravity. These changes can contribute to greater body awareness, improved alignment, and an enhanced overall sense of well-being.

Bindegewebe und Schwerkraft Im Rolfing® spielt die Schwerkraft eine zentrale Rolle.
